Tibetan Medicine in the West

A modern Tibetan Doctor in Ulan Ude (Russia).

Many Tibetan physicians immigrated to the West, namely Europe, USA and Canada. Thereby a wealth of knowledge on Tibetan Medicine was brought to the West. Although in Europe they cannot practice as Tibetan physicians - they may give health and diet consultations; e.g. at the Tibetan Medical Center in Spain, the  New Yuthok Institute for Tibetan Medicine or the International Academy for Traditional Tibetan Medicine (IATTM) , both in Italy). The photograph shows Dr. Nida Chenagtsang, founder and director of IATTM.

Tibetan Medicine is still not officially established in the West. Overall acceptance and recognition on a long term basis can only be gained by scientific research and documentation on the efficacy of Tibetan formulas and therapies. Switzerland holds a leading position in this respect as “Swissmedic”,  the Swiss Agency for therapeutic products, recognizes the complimentary medicine category “Tibetan Medicine”.
